Note: Exposure of untreated wooden hive components to the elements can cause warping, cracking, or rot.
Before use, treat exterior surfaces with finishes suitable for outdoor use and safe for bees. Please note that some finishes require drying time to allow for the off-gassing of VOCs before installing bees.
Simple recipe to prepare 5 "candy boards" for winter (spring) feeding:
"Candy boards" serve as a food reserve for the spring to avoid starvation stress before nature begins to provide.
- 10kg white granulated sugar
- 600ml water
- 2.5ml apple cider vinegar - optional
- 5 sheets of unprinted newspaper
- 5 "candy boards"
Instructions:
- Add the vinegar to the water.
- Pour the sugar into a large bowl and add the water.
- Mix until the mixture resembles wet sand.
- Place a large sheet of unprinted newspaper in the bottom of the "candy board".
- Distribute 1/5 of the mixture into each "candy board" and press firmly.
- Make a hole in the center to help the bees find the food.
- Install on the hive when the temperature approaches 6°C (43°F).
